The Springs Pit Disaster,
26th November 1868.

On this page we will be bringing you up to date with the preparations for the 150th anniversary of the dreadful disaster in the Springs Pit in Hindley.  Plans are for a monument to be set over where it is assumed many of the casualties were buried, and a framed full list of names with ages of those who died, to be hung within the church.

SEE BELOW.

Now here is a coincidence.  Yesterday, 26th September 2017, we had a visit by a couple from Nova Scotia, Cananda.  It turned out that he was the great, great grandson of the Reverend Newbold, the vicar who was here at the time of the disaster.

We are pleased that the above hopes and plans have been completed. The monument now stands proudly beside the western end of the church, and the frame with the names hangs in the north-east corner of the church.
